The first book of the Bhagavad Gita, written by Krishna himself, this is one of the greatest spiritual texts to be composed down through the ages. It contains over 18 chapters and unfolds the story of a war between two armies led by Kuru and Paurava; followed by a conversation between Arjuna and Krishna. The author's purpose in writing such a text was to convey teachings of what Hinduism has been preaching for centuries: that is, that we should understand our true identity with God and live accordingly. As such, it can be summarized as a narrative where divine power aligns with humanity for the goals they wish to achieve (whether they are good or bad). This book often gives advice to Arjuna about his role in the war; but the most notable part of it is when Krishna (known as "Arjuna's charioteer" in the text) battles with Bhima. The two battle fiercely, though Arjuna has never fought with anyone before. The book reveals Krishna's true identity; he is not an ordinary mortal but is actually Vishnu in human form, one of the principal gods of Hinduism. He also warns Arjuna that he must not lose heart when fighting, or else bad results will occur in his life after death. The book also reveals some of the war's inner turmoil and the reasons for Arjuna's need to fight. Krishna, in his role as Arjuna's charioteer, is acting as a mediator between these two groups: the Kaurava and Brâhmana. The title of this book literally means "the field of battle": it describes the context in which the Bhagavad Gita was composed. The term "kurukshetra" itself literally refers to "the field on which armies fight". The name of the text itself literally means "the victory of victory". Arjuna is the central character of this book. The Bhagavad Gita is his story, but the story's main hero is Arjuna himself. The Gita thus also functions as a kind of guide-book for life, telling Arjuna what to do and not to do in situations he encounters. Krishna tells Arjuna about various qualities which will lead him to success in battle, and also reveals that Arjuna's true self takes precedence over all else. He also reveals that there are two key values in Hinduism: wisdom and compassion. These are the attributes which will enable one to live successfully both on earth and in heaven. However, Krishna cautions Arjuna that such qualities involve pain and suffering as well as joy and pleasure. Arjuna asks several questions during the course of the book, the most famous of which is: The Bhagavad Gita is divided into 18 chapters, or "parâdhâs". It is narrated by Arjuna to his charioteer: Krishna. It is essentially a spiritual discourse on why we should put our supreme value on God and live according to His will. The Gita expounds upon Krishna's philosophy of nonviolence; but also highlights some of the consequences of following such a philosophy.
