In the last few decades, there have been many advances in digital design and technologies that have changed how film, television and even video games are produced. A recent trend has been to use a virtual set as a method of production. A virtual set is a computer-generated replica of an envisioned architectural space, with all the mechanicals already in place for the performer to interact with on screen without actually moving themselves physically around on location (a practice known as green screen). Several different software programs can be used for this process such as MayaLT or Unity 3D. Another popular choice is Amira which is more powerful than these two options but not nearly as popular.

Visual effects for television and film are traditionally outsourced to specialised companies, in cinematography, computer graphics or video game development in particular. However, there is increasing awareness of the movement in local industry to expand the visual effects sector locally. The growth of the sector has been particularly noticeable with Dublin City University launching a Bachelor of Visual Effects Degree course in 2011 which is currently available on a fast track basis only with students selected by means of application. The course has received high ratings from students, with over 500 applying for the 10 places available. By 2013 the course was fully subscribed with no additional places being made available, despite an increased demand for digital art skills. Digital Animation is also increasing in its popularity in Ireland. The Institute of Technology Carlow has a Digital Animation & Visual Effects course, while National College of Art and Design at Dublin Institute of Technology has a Digital Animation diploma. The latter has been described as an "incubator" for digital effects professionals.

It currently employs 230 staff and produces all the special effects live on air and has a turnover of approximately €7.2million per year. The RTÉ graphics department is also responsible for creating promotional graphics and animated idents, such as Cartoon Network Cartoon Jam. The Studio has produced visual effects for the following programmes: The production arm of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is located in Dublin.
